The hut we stayed in for a few nights on a recent trip is a private one. It is stocked with pots, pans, cutlery, sleeping bags, chainsaw, fuel, Lamps, kero, etc. etc. It also has a couple of old milk tins under the bench filled with spare food.
We thought it would be a good opportunity to go through the food and have a bit of a sort out.
At the bottom of one of the tins we came across the dehy meal pictured above, with the expiry date 11/98.
"That one is getting on a bit" we said, "Lets open it up and have a look".
A couple of plastic bags containing the meal, an oxygen absorbing sachet. Looks pretty good, smells good, not musty at all.

"Wonder how that would cook up after 19 years in the milk tin"?
We dumped the contents in a billy and added the appropriate amount of water, cold though, not hot, thinking we would let it soak for the day while we were out.
Get back in around 8pm, meal has done it thing and soaked up all the moisture, so we add a bit more and chuck it over the fire to heat her up. Mixed up some dead spud and some dehy peas too.
A couple of tentative tastes and the lads are all in agreement. "Dig in".
Went down a treat with a bit of plastic cheese melted on top for good measure.

Yep I would have eaten it (but then I will eat almost anything). My missus and I argue all the time as if something gets to its use by date without being consumed she chucks it out. My arguement is that it recommends "use by" and doesn't say "fucked by".

    Nice. Looks good.
Best before is just a suggestion.most things in a sealed foil bag will last almost indefinitely.
Use by on the other hand is different.

Damn, had a heap of blue sky meats ones from the mid 90s and biffed them. I ignore best by dates generally,common-sense tells you a lot... (or not)

Best Buy means "It's best to eat up to and including that date but can be safely eaten after that date"
Use Buy means " you need to use/eat it prior to the the end of that date to ensure "Your Safety" as recommended by the manufacture.
A Retailer can be prosecuted for selling a "Use By" but not a "Best By" dated item that has going past the date!
Doesn't mean you"ll get sick but also protects you from sellers selling old Shit!
It protects both the Retailer and the Purchaser.

Nah it doesn't work for me. I cannot believe that something is OK to eat today and suddenly not OK to eat tomorrow because it is one day past the date on a sticker. If it still looks OK and smells OK I will eat it a day after, a week after and a month after.
